Welcome to the Bureau of Consular Affairs Congressional assistance page

Welcome to the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Our office in the U.S. Department of State is responsible for three services that you’ll hear referred to as “consular casework” or “immigration casework”:

  1. Issuing passports to U.S. citizens;
  2. Helping U.S. citizens who are overseas; and
  3. Issuing visas to eligible foreigners who wish to come to the United States.

Through these services, we touch people’s lives around the world. The trained professionals offering these services work both in the United States – for example at a passport agency – and overseas at U.S. embassies and consulates.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs offers multiple resources to help you provide assistance to constituents, from online case status tools to searchable contact databases. Our “Congressional Liaison” pages are for Congressional offices only and are meant to complement the information available to your constituents on our public web pages. After all, we share the goal of helping our fellow citizens:  We believe that your constituent is our constituent, too.
